Intro

Calmerry is a relatively new e-counseling platform that quickly matches you with a licensed therapist based on key issues you’d like to work on. It is an affordable option, with several subscription plans, including a text message-only plan, to accommodate different needs and budgets.

Calmerry delivers impressive customer service and gives you access to useful wellbeing reflection tools to help you keep track of your progress during therapy.

Pros

  • Get matched with a licensed therapist (98% satisfaction rate)
  • Multiple plans available for a range of budgets and needs
  • Responsive customer service available by chat 24 hours a day
  • Additional tools and information to support your therapy

Cons

  • Phone sessions not available (video only)
  • Can’t select some preferences for therapist (e.g. gender, faith)

How does Calmerry work?

Signing up to Calmerry takes around 5 minutes.

The client-therapist matching process begins with a questionnaire that gathers some basic information, such as your age, gender, state you live in, and whether you're in a relationship, etc.

You’ll also be asked whether you’ve been in counseling before and some general mental wellbeing questions, like whether you’ve been feeling depressed or anxious lately or if you’ve felt suicidal in the past.

You then select what expertise you’d like your counselor to have based on what you’d like help with, such as trauma, grief, or self-esteem. If you don’t see the specialism you’re looking for, you can also select ‘Other’ and type your own response.

You’re not able to select a preference for any characteristics of the therapist, such as your preferred age, gender, or religious affiliation. However, 98% of Calmerry clients think their therapist was a good match for them.

Once you’ve created an account, you can interact with your personal dashboard. There is a (human) mental health assistant you can speak with before subscribing.

From your dashboard, you can also view your therapy plan, track your mood, and write down thoughts and feelings in a journal. There’s also a handy reflection bot you can chat to. These can be very helpful tools to support your therapy journey, to check in with how you’re feeling, and to track any changes over time.

Matching with a therapist happens after you’ve subscribed to the service, and takes around 24 hours, slightly longer in some cases. If you’re not happy with your match, you can get in touch with the support team to provide your reason for requesting a new therapist.

Depending on the subscription you go for, you can speak with your therapist in two ways: via text message or through a live video session. You can access your secure therapy “room” on any device connected to the internet, and you can also download the Calmerry app.

As with most online therapy chat platforms, you won’t message your therapist in real-time, but you can send messages whenever you want in your private chat room, and the therapist will get back to you as soon as they can.

If you or a person you know is in danger of harm, call 1-800-273-8255 in the US or your national mental health hotline. If you are unsure of whom to contact, call the police (911 in the US, 112 in Europe).

Specializations

Therapists can join the Calmerry team if they are fully licensed and experienced mental health professionals, such as clinical psychologists, marriage and family therapists, clinical social workers, and licensed professional counselors.

All therapists have a master’s or doctorate in their field and have over 3,000 hours of clinical experience. Calmerry therapists go through a vetting process, use evidence-based approaches, and only work with clients within the state they’re licensed in.

Each therapist will have their particular areas of expertise and therapeutic approaches they typically use. Calmerry lists an array of specializations, including:

  • Anger management
  • Depression
  • Grief and trauma
  • Relationship
  • Anxiety and stress
  • Eating disorders
  • LGBTQIA+

  • Childhood abuse
  • Emotional abuse
  • PTSD
  • Chronic illness
  • Family conflict
  • OCD, and more

Ideal For

Calmerry is a great choice for people who enjoy the flexibility and regularity of communicating with their therapist via text message whenever they like.

The messaging-only plan (as well as being the most affordable choice) could also be a good fit if you’re very busy or if you simply find it easier to communicate your thoughts and feelings in writing—even if you move to live sessions later on.

The interactive reflection tools are a big plus of this platform, particularly for people who find it useful to visualize their progress, or for those wanting to capitalize on any insights they’ve gained during therapy.

Pricing and special offers

Calmerry does not list subscription plans on their website, but you can request them, or view them once you create an account.

Currently, there are three main subscription plans (billed monthly) that vary in cost based on how many live sessions you’d like. The most affordable option is a messaging plan, and the most expensive one offers four live sessions a week. Right now, Calmerry is offering discounts for your first month’s subscription.

Subscription Price What you get
Messaging $56.99/week Unlimited text messaging,Licensed counselor responds 5 days/week,Personalized therapy plan
Messaging + 1 live video $74.49/week One 30-minute live session,Unlimited text messaging,Licensed counselor responds 5 days/week,Personalized therapy plan
Messaging + 4 live video $89.99/week Four 30-minute live sessions,Unlimited text messaging,Licensed counselor responds 5 days/week,Personalized therapy plan

With every plan, you can switch your counselor (for free), cancel anytime, and have access to the platform’s reflection tools. If you’re a business looking to invest in digital therapy services for your team, you can request information about subscriptions.

If you’re not happy with the service you’ve received, you can ask for a refund through your Calmerry account settings. These are assessed on a case-by-case basis.

If you want to stop therapy, you can just cancel the automatic billing. To cancel your account, you need to contact the support team.

Calmerry excels in several areas:

-Responsive customer support

-Useful interactive tools, like a reflection helper and personal treatment plan, to support your therapy journey

-Multiple subscription options for different budgets and needs

What do customers say about Calmerry?

You can find lots of client testimonials and success stories on the site. Here are a few client reviews complimenting both the affordability and accessibility of Calmerry:

“Really cost-effective service. Nice support from both a therapist and cust support. Keep it up!”

“I absolutely love the chat option. It helped me to save money on therapy—I’m able to try out a therapist’s style without committing to a full session.”

“This service provided me continuous support and the feeling that there’s always someone around me. It’s something I didn’t get in “traditional” psychotherapy. Definitely love Calmerry and their unlimited messaging!”

Summary

Calmerry is an easy-to-use, convenient, and affordable online therapy platform that can usually match you with a licensed therapist within 24 hours.

You can choose a subscription plan based on how many live sessions you’d like. With any plan, you’ll get access to unlimited text messaging therapy, so you never have to wait to tell your therapist about anything that’s bothering you.

Calmerry’s customer support agents are available 24/7 and are very responsive. And if you find recording and tracking your wellbeing data helpful, as many people do, Calmerry provides several interactive tools, such as a mood tracker and a journal.

Face-to-face therapy simply isn’t an option for many of us. Online therapy platforms, like Calmerry, are making it possible for more people to access affordable therapy from the comfort of their own homes.
